The new aluminum version.

El Cabron Mod by CompVape

You have probably seen a couple versions of this mod before. It has been released in wooden versions before, but finally the metal version of this mod is released to the public by CompVape. I had my chance to get my hands on one of these before they were officially released, so I have been using this for a couple of weeks now and it is time I finally get my review of this device posted. This is a dual parallel 18650 (mostly) mechanical box mod. It is, of course, unregulated and will perform as well as the batteries that you put in it. I have the solid black version serial #268 which will be used for the purpose of this review. (See video and pictures below)

This mod is available in 3 different versions. Two are aluminum, one in solid black and the other with a polished finish. The third version is solid copper. When I shot the video, the specs were not yet released but I mentioned that I believed that the 510 assembly was copper. Now that the mod has been released the accompanying specs confirmed that guess. Here is a total rundown of the specs on this device.

  • Safe redesigned circuitry.
  • Will not fire if metal grounds to atty shell.
  • Non conductive button post to prevent heat transfer.
  • Dual 18650
  • Completely mechanical
  • Completely disassembleable
  • Magnetic button
  • Adjustable positive pin
  • 4 strong door magnets

Let me start off with one of those specs that I disagree with. "Completely Mechanical". If you take apart the positive assembly inside the mod, you will see that there is a wire that runs from the switch to the 510 connector to transfer the positive current to the atomizer. This,  in my opinion, makes it something slightly less than "completely mechanical" but that could be just me. The wire is insulated, and I assume that it is a solid copper wire so you could say I am splitting hairs here, but for the sake of full disclosure it deserved mentioning.

Either way, this box is definitely what you would call a "hard hitter" and it is very well designed. Despite a couple of edges that might be a bit sharp for some users, the mod feels very comfortable in the hand. The curved design makes it very easy to grip and fire in either hand, and the device is rather compact for it's dual 18650 capacity. The negative connections at the bottom of the mod screw in and out for replacing the batteries. This design might be a con for some, but I consider it to be a pro as it ensures good conductivity. The positive connectors are thumb screws that can be adjusted in to allow for button top batteries or out so your flat tops will fit making this a truly versatile device.

Pros:

  1. Very comfortable in the hand.
  2. I have spent most of my time with this device using builds around .1 ohm and the device has never even gotten warm on me.
  3. Very hard hitting mod.
  4. Dual batteries for better efficiency and longer battery life.
  5. Can be disassembled for cleaning.
  6. Easily fits flat or button top batteries.
  7. Adjustable 510. Every atomizer I have tried onthis device flush mounts.

Cons:

  1. The magnets can pop out of their slots. I have already lost one.
  2. The copper 510 could wear out in time. I haven't had any problems with it yet.
  3. Slightly sharp edges.
  4. The button assembly could rule out the use of some atomizers, although I can confirm that 23 mm atomizers do fit the device.

Do you need it?

If you are looking for a dual battery unregulated mod, than yes. The trouble with a mosfet device is all of the soldered connections are places for the current to escape from the device. This mod has no such issues. Despite the one wire in the device, it is a very efficient mod at delivering the power to your coils. As you can see in the pictures or video below, it fits very well in the hand and is very comfortable to fire with the angled button positioning. This has become a device that I reach for every day. With great efficiency and battery life, this mod will make you fall in love with unregulated vaping again. Excellent device from CompVape.
